Licht, met daarmee haar vluchtige schaduw en vergankelijkheid, voelt voor Iris Janssen als de ultieme visualisatie van tijd. Haar werk is een ode aan het fotoalbum als reactie op het huidige digitale tijdperk, waarin de hoeveelheid foto’s in sneltreinvaart toeneemt terwijl de waarde ervan daalt. Maar waarbij fotoalbums bestaan om foto’s te bewaren, maakt Iris Janssen foto’s die langzaam verdwijnen wanneer er licht bijkomt. Pas wanneer alle foto’s zijn verdwenen is het werk af, want wat overblijft is de herinnering.
“Met Light Writings hoop ik de toeschouwer het ‘nu’ te laten proeven, iets wat in deze tijd met veel afleidingen steeds moeilijker wordt.”
Het werk van Iris Janssen bestaat uit analoge fotografische beelden op plexiglas. De foto’s zijn gemaakt met ontwikkelvloeistof en zonder (digitale) camera. Ze zijn niet gefixeerd, waardoor de beelden verdwijnen met de tijd. De titel Light Writings verwijst naar de betekenis van fotografie. “Door het maken van foto’s zonder camera kan ik dichterbij de essentie van het medium komen.”
Tijdsbeleving is een van de onderwerpen die in het werk van Iris Janssen centraal staat, zij ziet tijd als een niet-lineair gegeven. De beelden zijn gepresenteerd op plexiglasplaten die samen een stervorm lijken te maken, zodat mensen om het werk kunnen lopen en door het werk heen kunnen kijken.

Light, with its fleeting shadow and impermanence, feels for Iris Janssen as the ultimate visualization of time. Her work is an ode to the photo album as a reaction to the current digital era, in which the number of photos increases at breakneck speed while their value decreases. But where photo albums exist to preserve photos, Iris Janssen makes photos that disappear slowly while light hits them. The work is finished when all photos have faded to black, for the memory is what remains.
“That way, I hope to give the visitor a taste of the ‘now’, something that is becoming increasingly difficult with the many distractions these days.”
The work of Iris Janssen consists of analog photographic images on plexiglass. The photos are made with developer and without a (digital) camera. They are not fixed, which is why the images darken in time. The title Light Writings refers to the meaning of photography. “By making photos without a camera I can get closer to the essence of the medium.”
Perception of time is one of the topics central to Iris Janssens work, she sees time as a non-linear given. The photos are presented on plexiglass plates that seem to make a star shape together, so that people can walk around the work and see through it.
